Local’s Choice: Zuzeum Team

The way we view and experience a city depends largely on ourselves, so if you task two people with describing one city, you may get two completely different pictures. This is why we regularly talk to residents of Riga for our Local's choice - it's fascinating to see the city through their eyes. This time, the team from the Zuzeum Art Centre, the largest contemporary art venue in Latvia, shared their must-see list.

Zuzeum is one of the most popular places on the Latvian art map. It has the largest private collection of Latvian art in the world with more than 20 thousand works spanning various genres.

People come here not only for the contemporary exhibitions, but also for a coffee or glass of sparkling wine on the roof, to work surrounded by art, to buy the latest magazines or a good book (which goes ever so well on the coffee table by the sofa) or to attend one of the museum’s numerous events – film screenings, live music evenings, lectures, and creative workshops – regularly held here.

Boar BBQ

If a Big Mac isn’t your cup of tea, try the burgers at Boar BBQ. Delicious meat (and lots of it), a proper non-rubbery bun, cheese, and onion rings.

Centrale 33

Mexican cuisine and especially excellent tacos. This taqueria in Grizinkalns also serves great churros with chocolate sauce, nachos alongside tomato salsa, empanadas, and other dishes native to Mexico

Soraksans

Korean cuisine in the Old Town. These guys opened their doors roughly 20 years ago and since then, the flavour and quality of their food have only got better with time. Many locals believe that this place has the best kimchi and the most delicious kimchi pancakes anywhere in the city.

Pauls Stradins Museum of the History of Medicine

Dedicated to medicine, this is a museum that doesn’t bore. The idea for it came from Paul Stradins, a famous Latvian surgeon and oncologist. He is said to have been inspired by the collection of Scottish surgeon John Hunter.

The exhibitions here are always up-to-date, elegantly contrasting and combining contemporary agenda – such as military conflict, mental well-being and healthy lifestyles – with medicine.

Café Osiris

A legendary café from the 90s, where intellectuals, creatives, politicians, and celebrities alike used to mingle. Recently, the cafe celebrated its 30th anniversary with a grand reopening of their renovated interior.

Bolderāja

A mysterious underground book bar where you can listen to the presentation of an independent magazine with a glass of wine, browse rare books, and discuss the difficulties of maverick publishing.

DOM gallery

The DOM gallery (previously LOW) was opened a few years ago by a group of young artists. It seems the governing principle of this space is openness to experimentation. DOM provides a platform for emerging artists, allowing them to experiment freely, search for themselves, and organise their own debut exhibitions.

The Paul Jaunzems Stone Sculpture Park

This unusual stone sculpture park is located in Vakarbuļļi. It resembles a giant open-air artist’s studio, a pagan temple, an alien film set, or possibly all of the above.

The artist Paul Jaunzems has been working on this park alone for more than two decades; it takes a year on average to create just one sculpture.

Aleponija

Aleponija Aleponija is a small bar that looks like a wooden box from the inside. It boasts chamber music performances, poetry evenings, as well as a range of craft beers.
