Piana Vyshna: New bar in the old town

A new bar has opened its doors in the Old Town, near St Peter's Church. "Piana Vyshnia offers just one drink – the Ukrainian characteristic cherry tincture with berries at the bottom. We tried it and here’s what we think.

“Piana Vyshnia was opened by “!Fest”, a Ukrainian holding company focusing on restaurants with creative and unusual concepts. Creativity is definitely not lacking here: the bar literally sings an ode to cherries and cherry liqueur. Everything from décor to the drink itself is reminiscent of these berries.

Cherry tartare is served in beautiful stemmed glasses. A distinct cherry aroma, balanced with alcohol and a pleasant aftertaste. Moderately sweet, fairly alcoholic and very cherry-like.

Traditionally, the first shot is finished in one go and without the help of hands. All of the following drinks may be taken as one pleases.

The interior features a grand design of cherry-filled bottles. Dozens of glass bottles decorated with intense red liquid, hanging from the ceiling, covering the space from chandelier to bar shelves.

On weekends, the bar is crowded and noisy – the liquor is flowing, people are coming and going, curious tourists and equally curious locals arrive, while the friendly staff behind the bar always remember to give guests a warning: “Just don’t gorge yourself on berries”. The experience is pleasant and fun in its simplicity.

“Piana Vyshnia is very popular in multiple countries: this year it opened in Riga and Krakow, but before that it opened its doors in Budapest, Bucharest, Warsaw and several other European cities.
