Out of Town
Clay is part of nature, and as the masters say, “to work with nature, you need to be closer to nature.” We’ve gathered studios that follow this principle — located near rivers, forests, and the fresh air of the countryside.
Cepļi
At the ceramic studio Cepļi, anyone can try their hand at working with clay — both children and adults. It’s a great place to come as a family and feel like a true potter: create your own mug, a breakfast plate, or a charming souvenir that will remind you of a lovely day. Your progress will be overseen by cats — lots of fluffy supervisors who make sure you’re doing everything right.

Each session lasts several hours, during which you’ll have time to create your piece. You won’t be able to take your creation home immediately — firing takes 1–2 months here. In addition to making your own piece, you can also browse the large shop filled with ceramic works that reflect the living spirit of Latvian cultural traditions. Bonus — the studio host is lovely, according to NBHD and Google Maps reviews.
Address: Skulte Parish, Limbažu novads
Price: Individual session — €50 per hour, 2 hours — €80. The price includes materials and firing for one piece. Firing for additional pieces — €5 per item.
Saules ceplis
What makes this place special is the presence of ceramic designer Madara Atike, who creates tableware using ancient traditional techniques. Each piece is hand-polished, fired in an open pit kiln, and finished with wooden and silver spoons.
The master introduces guests to the roots of ceramic art, the process of making pottery, and the specific features of black kiln firing. Only after this cultural immersion do guests move to practice: under the guidance of the ceramicist, you will create your own pieces using the black ceramics technique. The firing is done immediately — so you can take your work home right after the session.

Krāslava — Valdis Pauliņš
This workshop uses only forms and decorative elements that are traditional for the Latgale region. Among the studio’s creations, you’ll find unique ceramic cats, a signature of this place.
You’ll be guided by Valdis, a ceramicist who creates tableware in his studio in Krāslava. He is deeply concerned about the decline of pottery in Latgale — a craft that is slowly disappearing — and actively involves talented people in order to preserve and pass on these traditions.
In the workshop, you can create your own piece, take part in the firing process, go on a tour, and purchase Valdis’ works.
Address: Pils iela 10, Krāslava

Virzas
This is a family-friendly studio, with children and their parents making up the core audience. The souvenirs created here reflect the studio’s concept — bright, uniquely shaped pieces with inscriptions and drawings.
The workshop follows classical pottery methods: a clay wheel, where every step is done by hand. Children are taught using the same approach.

Ceramics workshop by Zanda Ragel
Zanda Ragel’s ceramic studio in the village of Nereta is located in a picturesque spot — right on the riverbank, which you’ll be able to gaze at throughout your entire session. Zanda chose not to hide the beauty of nature and set up her workspace directly on the veranda to spark inspiration.
She works entirely by hand, without using any technical tools. Zanda creates clay pots, dishes, vases, and other souvenirs, staying true to the traditions of rural ceramics. All of her pieces are crafted using patchwork techniques and plant imprinting, and she teaches her guests to work freely — ignoring conventional standards and embracing creativity. If cats supervise the work in other studios, here you’ll be watched over by a curious sheep — who might even help you choose the perfect souvenir for your home.

Address: Kalna Gribacāni, Neretas pagasts
Price: Visits must be booked in advance, and prices should also be confirmed individually. Workshops are held only during the summer months, from May to September.

Maala Studija
At Maala Studija, you can not only attend a regular class and make a mug, but also join a coworking space — learn from creative minds and work side by side with them. You’ll have access to clay, porcelain, engobe, paints, and a kiln— everything you need to create truly unique ceramics.
The studio offers classes for every taste: from open-form design sessions to 18+ women’s workshops, where participants create intimate souvenirs.
