“Common Table”: a unique social installation in Galerija Centrs

More than half (58%) of Latvian residents admitted that they feel lonely - this is the statistic provided by the Institute of Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility and the research company Kantar. In response to this problem, the "Common Table" - a place for meetings, events and acquaintances - appeared in the Galerija Centrs shopping center in Riga.

The table appeared in Galerija Centrs on June 27 and will remain there until the end of September. The creators of the project say that the installation was created to promote social cohesion and help solve the growing problem of loneliness.

In societies where signs of loneliness are more prevalent, there is often low social activity – people are less likely to attend cultural events or public places. “The Common Table is designed as an accessible meeting place and a platform for events. Workshops and talks will be held here, the “table” is a place to work, learn and organize social events in an urban environment. The project is part of the summer program “City Picnic”.

“Ridzenes Street is part of our shopping center, but with the Common Table we want to make it more public and allow it to be used as a meeting place. At the same time, this ‘table’ is also a social project with which we want to reduce social isolation in our society,” says Lasma Vilande, manager of Galerija Centrs shopping center.

The visual concept of the project is somewhat reminiscent of the table from the chapter “The Mad Tea Party” of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. The lilac-pink color was taken from the brandbook of Burzma food hall, a space located on the top floor of the shopping center.

Galerija Centrs is ready to invite residents and guests of Riga who need a public space to meet and work between work and home. Applications for events are accepted from individuals, as well as non-governmental organizations – to present ideas, experiences, stories and research. businesses and organizations willing to participate in public dialogue and discussion are also welcome.

For events, you can contact the shopping center administration by emailing marketings@galerijacentrs.lv.
