The path into AI depends on the role you want to pursue. Developing AI systems requires knowledge of programming, mathematics, machine learning, and data analysis. For those who plan to use AI in their existing profession — for example, in marketing, media, design, finance, or business management — earning a new degree is not always necessary. In many cases, it is enough to master the right tools and learn how to apply them effectively at work.

There are many ways to study AI in Latvia, including universities, colleges, intensive courses, and state-supported programmes. The main admission period for educational institutions takes place during the summer, although application deadlines may vary depending on the programme.

After Grade 9: The First Step into IT

After completing basic education, students can choose programmes in programming, IT, electronics, or automation. These programmes provide fundamental technical skills that can later be developed further in AI, data analysis, and digital technologies.

You do not necessarily need to look for a programme called Artificial Intelligence. Most specialists begin by studying programming, algorithms, and mathematics, and later specialise in machine learning, intelligent systems, or data science.

RIGA TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY (RTU)

Programmes in computer science, programming, data analysis, and intelligent systems provide a strong foundation for further specialisation in machine learning and AI.

Programme: Datorsistēmas (Computer Systems)

Tuition fee: €3,990 per year for fee-paying students. State-funded places are also available, including in Riga, Liepāja, and Rēzekne.

Who it is for: Future developers, engineers, and data specialists.

The main admission period for bachelor’s programmes takes place in summer. Application deadlines vary depending on the programme.

Who it is for: Those who want to gain a practical technical qualification and continue their education later.

Some programmes may offer opportunities for further internships or employment with the company.
