The “Most Energy-Efficient Building in Latvia 2024” contest celebrates innovative architectural and renovation projects that lead in sustainable design and energy efficiency. This year’s winners showcase best practices in energy-saving technology, environmentally-friendly materials, and design. The annual event aims to inspire broader use of energy-efficient solutions across Latvia, encouraging both public and private sectors to prioritize sustainability in the built environment.

What features make these projects stand out in terms of energy efficiency?

1st place: Mārupes Dārzs

Address: Lielā iela 45, Mārupe

Developer: Hepsor

The winner of Latvia’s 2024 competition for the most eco-friendly and energy-efficient residential development is Mārupes Dārzs in Mārupe, developed by Hepsor. This residential complex consists of four buildings, each with 23 apartments, surrounding green courtyards filled with young fruit trees and shrubs. A drainage canal running along the property collects rainwater. It is designed to resemble a river, creating a natural water presence and adding visual appeal to the space.

A key feature of the project is its focus on indoor air quality. Solar collectors are installed on the rooftops, providing water heating primarily through clean, renewable solar energy. This solution reduces reliance on traditional energy sources and supports a more sustainable lifestyle. Each building is equipped with a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery, which provides a continuous supply of fresh, oxygen-rich air without needing to open windows. It improves the buildings’ insulation and helps reduce utility costs. Triple-glazed windows also enhance insulation within the apartments. The complex received A-class energy efficiency certification.

Hepsor has taken a holistic approach to investing in eco-friendly housing that remains affordable for residents. Mārupes Dārzs makes high-energy-efficiency living accessible and ensures that a high quality of life is within reach.

2nd place: Deglava Gleznotāju Rezidence

Address: Dravnieku iela 1, Riga

Developer: Monum

The Deglava Gleznotāju Rezidence, a set of six ten-story residential buildings, earned an honorable second place. Each apartment is equipped with radiators featuring adjustable thermostats and individual meters for heat, water, and electricity, allowing residents to control their own energy and heat consumption. The finishing materials provide excellent thermal and sound insulation. Another eco-friendly feature of the complex is the generous landscaping throughout the property, which adds to its green appeal.

Silvas Nami’s landscaping includes a variety of green spaces. The project was recognized for its use of digital tools in the construction process, making it both fast and energy-efficient.

These projects set a high standard for the future of the construction sector, focusing on sustainability and energy efficiency. Silvas nami, Deglava Gleznotāju rezidence and especially Mārupes Dārzs, the winner, exemplify how developers can significantly reduce energy consumption and thus decrease carbon footprints. These projects not only demonstrate a high level of environmental responsibility but also create accommodating living conditions. This approach not only reduces operating costs but also contributes to an improved quality of life, showing how modern construction can go hand in hand with environmental care.
